This has been a crazy start of the year and of my new adventure as being a science writer. I mean I was prepared to encounter ups and downs, but living through them always makes it more real.

First, I decided to replace the grey and dark and cold Berlin weather for the sunny and blue sky of Gran Canaria. At least now I can social distance while doing Yoga and chilling at the beach!

Taking advantage of my new freedom as a digital nomad! What a huge benefit that was for my mental health state!

On the business side, I started looking for projects, applied to some (and got rejected ?) and cold-emailed companies and non-profit organisations. I knew this would be a bit of a pain, especially at the beginning. So, I shall not give up and keep getting the word out!

But I also got good news on that end: I got hired as blog commissioner for the Federation of Microbiological Societies (FEMS). This is pretty cool as I get to work together with researchers to help them tell the Microbiology community about their awesome research.

What did we publish?

As my first project, we published the article a new R package in microbial ecology. Check it out to learn about a new analysis tool for treating microbial community and environmental data.

On BacterialWorld, we published some cool articles this month.

Read about how bacteria wrap themselves with their own flagella and how that helps them to infect the human body.

And we discuss how bacteria produce nanowires. One day, we might replace our electrical cables with these green materials.

If you were wondering how the last two years of running BacterialWorld have been for me, make sure to check out the post:

What else happened this month?

At the beginning of January, I and a few international scientists started a new project. And we are all super duper excited about it. Building a new online platform for scientists took me quite some time this month. So, my website creation skills definitely multiplied with this endeavour.

Unfortunately, we are not fully ready to launch yet, but I am convinced that I can tell you more about this project in the next Newsletter. So, stay tuned!

In case you were wondering what you could hire a science writer for: I just published an article to explain the many projects that science writers can work on.

Maybe this will give you some ideas in case you were thinking of including a science writer into your next (research) project or even steering your career towards that direction.

Okay, that was my first month of being my own boss as a science writer. Sign up to our Newsletter to follow me on this exciting adventure!
